If you’re of a certain vintage, the name Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) will ring a bell straight away.
Released by Benny Hill in 1971, it’s a brilliantly daft (and slightly tragic!) tale of a heroic milkman, a rival bread delivery man, and a love triangle that ends in a shootout… all played out to a jaunty tune.
Not your average milk round, eh? 😄
🚚 From Ernie’s Day… to Today
Back in Ernie’s time, the milkman was part of the fabric of British life. Early mornings. Clinking bottles. A quiet nod as he moved from doorstep to doorstep.
And while we’re pleased to say our rounds are a lot less dramatic than Ernie’s, the heart of the job hasn’t changed one bit.
At Doorstep Deliveries, we still believe in:
- 🥛 Fresh milk on your doorstep before you wake up
- 🇬🇧 Supporting British farmers
- ♻️ Reusable glass bottles that actually make a difference
- 😊 Good old-fashioned service with a modern twist
🐎 No Horses… But Plenty of Hustle
Ernie might have had a horse and cart, but today’s milkmen are navigating:
- Early morning starts (often from 10pm through the night!)
- Changing delivery routes
- The odd missing bottle or cheeky milk thief
- And yes… the British weather doing its usual thing 🌧️
It might not make the charts like Ernie did, but there’s still a story behind every round.
💙 Why the Milkman Still Matters
In a world of next-day delivery and big supermarkets, there’s something reassuring about the familiar sound of bottles landing gently on your doorstep.
It’s local.
It’s reliable.
And it’s quietly making a comeback.
Just without the cowboy-style ending.
🎶 Still Going Strong
While Ernie might be a character from a different time, the spirit of the milkman is alive and well.
Every delivery we make is a little nod to that tradition — just updated for today’s world.
So next time you spot your milk on the doorstep, remember…
There’s still a bit of Ernie in all of us.
Doorstep Deliveries – Keeping the tradition alive (minus the shootouts). 🥛💙
