🐶 Dog Person or 🐱 Cat Person? The Great Doorstep Deliveries Debate
At Doorstep Deliveries, our milk rounds take us to hundreds of homes every week. We deliver fresh milk, bread, eggs and other local goodies before most people have even had their first cup of tea. But there’s one thing we’ve learned during those early-morning deliveries…
The real bosses of the house are usually the pets.
And over time we’ve noticed something interesting: people tend to fall into two camps.
Dog people… or cat people.
So today we’re opening up The Great Doorstep Deliveries Debate.
🐶 Life on the Milk Round with Dogs
Dogs tend to greet the milkman like a long-lost friend who’s returned from an epic journey.
You’ll often hear the familiar sound of paws racing towards the door as soon as the milk crate clinks on the doorstep.
Some dogs proudly escort us down the drive like personal security guards. Others wag their tails with such enthusiasm you’d think we’d brought them a full English breakfast.
And occasionally we meet a dog who clearly believes they are part of the delivery team.
We’ve had dogs try to:
Inspect the milk bottles
Supervise the crate placement
Carry our gloves off as “souvenirs”
Escort us back to the van
Every milkman knows the friendly neighbourhood dog who waits by the window every delivery day.
🐱 The Cat Perspective
Cats, on the other hand, approach the milkman situation rather differently.
Where dogs bring enthusiasm, cats bring… judgement.
They tend to sit on the windowsill observing events like tiny supervisors ensuring everything is done to their standards.
Occasionally a cat will wander over to inspect the bottles. Sometimes they’ll sit directly on the doorstep as if to say:
“You may proceed with the milk delivery… but only under my supervision.”
And every milkman has encountered the classic doorstep cat who refuses to move until the job is done.
🐾 Pets: The Unofficial Doorstep Inspectors
One of the things we love most about being a traditional milk delivery service is the connection with local communities.
Over time we get to recognise houses, gardens… and of course the pets who live there.
Some even become regular characters on the round.
There’s the dog who waits for us every Monday morning.
The cat who patrols the street at 4am like a tiny security guard.
And the occasional curious pet who seems convinced the milk bottles belong to them.
It’s all part of the charm of doorstep deliveries.
🥛 Fresh Milk, Friendly Faces
While the milk might be the star of the show, the real joy of the job is the sense of community.
Delivering fresh milk in reusable glass bottles isn’t just convenient — it’s also a small way to support British farmers, local producers, and traditional doorstep services.
And along the way we get to meet some wonderful four-legged characters too.
